Gut Noise

Published in dotdotdash (Issue 5: Feast) in November 2010.

Laughter is what happens
when humour reaches the puppet strings
of the diaphragm and contracts
them swifty, sending shocked waves
of voice box to erupt
out of the throat and mouth like sweet-tasting.

An early laugh is like a green banana:
hard and tangy-sweet. Sometimes it sticks
to my face like a bubble of gum
that popped.
This laugh I had to peel off my face.
