Confession Free-Write

19 January 2011

I was flipping through my writing journal today and found this free-write from back in November. The prompt was to write about a confession.

This confession will come as a surprise to you. She may appear well-adjusted, but she has an uncanny knack for fooling people into believing that. Ask her about her secret; she’ll rid herself of confidence before you finish the question. She’ll blush, appreciative of your interest, but too ashamed at the truth to tell you. Instead, you should ease it out of her slowly, warm her to the idea that you might be trustworthy of her secret, to the idea that you will respect her for it, not form an image of an oddity-riddled woman who needs help and special consideration. You’ll win her trust, if you persevere. It’s what she wants: someone to care enough to press for information, not to back off when she balks at your question, pretending there’s nothing to be told. Nothing at stake. Really, there is so much at stake. A breakthrough.
