Poem-a-day Challenge: Day 3

15 October 2010

It’s Day 3 of Big Tent Poetry‘s challenge to write a poem a day for 7 days. Today I’m back on track with the prompt, and took the phrase “new to you” literally.

Pants from me, to the Salvos*, to you

When you pull on these pants, feel my legs’ envy.
Start adoring the guy on the jeans commercial
like I did. Feel how it felt when I made out in those pants.

You should introduce them to the shirts you wear
so they don’t feel like an outsider. Remember, they have
never met your accessories before. They haven’t met

your legs, either. They will be shy at first,
but don’t let them hide in their shell for too long.
Coax them out with sweet-scented lotion.

Before you know it, they’ll be hugging your legs,
cozying right up to them like an affectionate puppy.
That’s when you’ll know you’ve worn them in.

When you bought these pants for five dollars
at the Salvos, did you wonder who wore them
before you? Perhaps a smidgeon of my being

will transfer from me to you through the fabric’s
pores, the way a transplant heart recipient suddenly
feels like learning to play the piano

when she receives a late musician’s sturdy heart,
the rhythm of her now-healthy body
beating inside like a metronome.

*The Salvos is an Australian term for the Salvation Army, i.e. a second-hand store.

How charming, all the introductions. And nicely done, how you worked your way to the heart transplant.

    divine……nice creative poem….
Love is also like a pant ….oneness at top….two in the bottom…
    love all…

love the transference from one to another and how each is affected by the other… a new heart beating with another’s breath made it seem so subtle yet it is so powerful… day 3 soaring
